It dependnts on the sequence of first amino acids of the protein (targeting signals). If the protein is a membrane attached protein or secreted one, translation will take place on the surface of ER after the ribosome attaches to ER. If the protein is not a membrane attached one, translation will be on the free ribosome.
The virual coded protein is translated by cellular translation machinary and will not processed as non-self protein by the infected cell. Only the peptide reaches cell surface with MHC-1, then it is possible the immune cells can recognize it.
